LASA-group meets DEAS-group in Berlin

June 2010

A select group of researchers from LASA travelled to Berlin to meet with a group of researchers from the German Centre of Gerontology (DZA) who are working on the German Ageing Study (DEAS). The aim of the meeting was to get to know one another and each other’s research better, to find shared interests in each other’s work and to tentatively explore possibilities for future collaborations. The meeting took place on the 31st of May and the 1st of June and was organised by Prof. Clemens Tesch-Roemer of DZA

and Dr. Martijn Huisman of LASA.
Presentations were given by researchers from both DEAS and LASA on a number of research topics, including: pension and retirement in relation to health, socioeconomic inequalities in health, social participation in changing welfare states, self-rated health and its determinants, sleep in later life, and monitoring long-term care. In large part due to the warm hospitality of the host in Berlin, and active participation by all attendants, participants agreed that the workshop was a success, and that it should be followed-up in the near future.
During the meeting it was decided that several participants from DEAS and LASA would join to organise symposia for the 2011 conference of the International Association of Gerontology and Geriatrics together. Moreover, at least one researcher from LASA will travel to Berlin for a longer period of time to do research on DEAS data. All in all the aim of the meeting was achieved.
