The Longitudinal Aging Study Amsterdam (LASA) at the VU University and VU University Medical Centre is initiated by the Ministry of Health, Welfare and Sports in 1991 to determine predictors and consequences of ageing. LASA focuses on

Observation cycles
Every three years, the participants are re-examined. In the cohort started in 1992, so far observation cycles took place in 1992-1993, 1995-1996, 1998-1999, 2001-2003, and 2005-2006. In 2008-2009 LASA started the next cycle. In the cohort started in 2002, so far observation cycles took place in 2002-2003 and 2005-2006. Side studies are carried out in-between cycles. In addition to data on changes in functioning over time provided by the long-term follow-up of the same people, the comparison of the 1992 and 2002 cohorts provide data on period and cohort differences.
